Meeting Nutritional Guidelines

A large portion of Americans are overweight and undernourished, which means that Americans are eating too many calories but not getting enough vitamins and minerals. Nutrient dense foods provide a significant amount of vitamins and minerals with a moderate amount of calories. Naturally nutrient dense foods are foods such as fruits and vegetables, but not all people have access to naturally nutrient dense foods all the time.

The Snackwise® Nutrition Rating System is based on the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Snackwise® measures the nutrient density of snack foods, so you can make healthier snack choices. Snackwise® distinguishes itself from most nutrition rating systems as it not only considers calories, sugar, sodium and fat, but also ensures that snack foods contain desirable nutrients like protein, fiber, calcium and other key nutrients that are needed in the diet (read our Nutrition System Guidelines). The chart below lists the parameters used for rating the nutritional quality of snack foods.
